A print by Shiko Munakata, 1903-1975. A zen Buddhist, he worked in oil painting, then woodblock printing, calligraphy and ceramics. He is sometimes called the Japanese Picasso because of his prolific multi media creative work. He was part of the sasuka-hanga movement and the mingei, folk art, movement. Japanese Haku Maki Print
A print by the Japanese print maker Haku Maki, 1924-2000. He began in a career as a kamikaze pilot during world war 2. The surrender by Japan saved his life. He became a teacher and learned print making. His prints are unusual as they start with a woodblock which is carved then pressed with cement. When the cement is dried, it is carved further. Antique Japanese painting of a Goju-no-to, five storied pagoda of the typical Japanese Buddhist temple. The pagoda is decorated using Kanji with a repeated sutra and other passages. Horin, the nine rings atop the pagoda are each a symbol. It measures 21.25" by 10.13". Some signs of age. Painted in sumi ink on paper. Meiji period 1868-1912.
