Japanese antique large futon cover with a design of Shochikubai, Three Friends of Winter; pine, bamboo and plum. Symbolizing the qualities of each: vitality of pine - evergreen even in the cold and snow; vigor of bamboo - growing with unstoppable strength; and plum - grace, beauty and anticipation of Spring.
On this futon covering, the pine is large and growing around it is the blossoming plum. Smaller shoots of plum and bamboo grow low out of the winter-hardened ground.

Japanese Antique Indigo Noren with Butterflies and Peonies
Japanese antique noren (doorway curtain) made of indigo dyed cotton in three panels. The design is executed in traditional tsutsugaki paste resist technique and shows a scene of butterflies and an exuberance of blossoming peonies growing from the rocky ground. Looped tabs at the top of the noren allow for it to be hung by a rod.

Japanese antique wisteria mon futon cover. Made of cotton and sewn together in four panels, this futon cover is decorated with the large wisteria blossom crest (Fuji no Mon) of the Fugiwara clan. The Fugiwara family gained political power through diplomacy and intermarriages with the imperial family from the 9th to the 12th century. Besides this, the wisteria blossom is a symbol of grace, longevity and refined beauty.

Japanese Antique Kiri Isho Tansu
Japanese antique two section kasane isho tansu (stacking clothing chest). Made with all kiri (paulownia) wood on the front. The sides, top and drawer interiors are sugi (cryptomeria) wood. Iron hardware includes round lock plates and warabite shaped drawer pulls. Each section is an equal height of 18 3/4" so they could be used side by side.

Age: Meiji Period (1868-1912)
