Unusual Antique Japanese Two-Section Choba Tansu
Antique Japanese two-section stacking choba tansu (merchant’s chest) from the late Edo period. Originally made for shopkeepers and traders. These chests served both practical and representational roles—used to store documents, currency, ledgers, and shop goods.

An antique Japanese Tansu chest called Honbako or book chest used to store books and manuscripts. Made of Keyaki (Zekokova) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Bronze drawer pulls and iron sliding door handles. Upper section was a built-in shelf for storing in a standing position. The design evokes the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1920's.

An antique Japanese Kuruma Tansu (wheeled chest) made of Kuri (Chestnut) and Sugi (Cryptomeria) woods. Horizontal slats adorn all four sides of the Tansu. All original hand forged iron hardware including the 4 corner rings used to attach ropes to move this chest from place to place. Interior has a center shelf and two small drawers for added storage.

Edo Japanese Antique Ryu Dragon Carving
Japanese antique carving of a dragon. Carved of hinoki wood, lacquered and painted with gold and polychrome mineral pigments. This dragon once graced the inside of a Buddhist shrine in a prominent household or temple. Both the carving and the painting is masterfully done with details to the individual scales, long metal whiskers and reverse-painted-glass eyes.
Symbolic of strength, power and transformation, the dragon can also represent nobility and wisdom.
